Thematic Literature 3201
deals
in many ways with the theme of relationships.
Many works are outlined in Themes for All Times under this heading
and the theme itself is divided into three main categories: Relationships (i)
With Family and Friends; (ii) Within Society; (iii) With the Environment.
This lesson constitutes the first in a unit devoted entirely to
the exploration of relationships. By
the end of this lesson, students will be able to express their feelings on love
relationships through discussion and via the written word.
Specific Curriculum Outcomes
1.
Students will examine others’ ideas and synthesize what is helpful to
clarify and extend their own understanding.
2.
Students will demonstrate active listening and concern for the needs,
rights and feelings of others.
3.
Students will make informed personal responses to challenging print texts
and reflect on their responses.
4.
Students will note the relationship of specific elements of a particular
text to elements of other texts.
5.
Students will use writing to extend, explore and reflect on (i)their
experiences with and insights into challenging texts and issues and (ii)the
basis for their feelings, values and attitudes.
·
Making
use of the text, pages 1-3 Themes for All Times, as background reading,
students will interrogate To My Dear and Loving Husband by Anne
Bradstreet (page 5) and The Cinnamon Peeler by Michael Ondaatje (supplied
by teacher). Students will
construct meaning in a class discussion with the teacher regarding these
selections and then a more detailed discussion in small groups (outcomes 1and 2
above).
·
Students
will be given the opportunity to begin writing a journal entry ) for a period of twenty minutes during class) on the topic of
relationships, choosing one of the following options:
-
Compare and contrast To My Dear and Loving Husband and The Cinnamon
Peeler.
-
Discuss your relationship with someone you love (a parent, a sibling, friend,
etc.).
-
Write a poem of your own about a love relationship.
Assessment
As this is the first lesson, the activities
outlined above are meant to spark student interest in the topic of
relationships. The journal entry will constitute a small part of a
cumulative assessment and as such, it will be graded holistically on a
scale of 1-5 (poor to exemplary) in terms of how well the student is able to
articulate meaning in his/her response.
